Not that it is critical to the operation of your computer, but if you like to keep your computer up-to-date, this free TechTracker tool from CNET is very easy to use.
Just sign up and it will install a small app on your taskbar that will automatically (when you start your computer) check your software for non-current versions. It will then direct you to a website that lists the out-of-date software and allows you to click on the update.
As I am not comfortable with apps running on their own, I change the setting to run when I want.
There are other tools that perform the same task but I think this one has less performance impact and better ease-of-use.
